Dr. Twaha Kagabo Announces Candidacy on NRM Ticket for 2026, Leaves NUP

Hon. Twaha Kagabo, the Member of Parliament for Bukoto South, has officially announced his departure from the National Unity Platform (NUP) and declared his intention to contest in the 2026 general elections on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket. This announcement comes amidst significant political shifts within Uganda, particularly following a major declaration from Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).

“After careful consideration and consultation with my supporters, I have decided to leave the NUP and contest the 2026 elections under the NRM banner. This decision aligns with my belief in the values of unity, stability, and national development that the NRM stands for.” Kagabo said

Kagabo’s decision follows closely on the heels of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s recent announcement that he will not be running for the presidency in 2026. As the chairperson of the PLU, Gen. Muhoozi has urged his followers to return to their mother parties, particularly encouraging them to join the NRM, which he emphasized is in line with the core values of the PLU.

Kagabo, a prominent figure within the PLU, expressed optimism about Gen. Muhoozi’s future in Ugandan politics, stating, “While Gen. Muhoozi has chosen not to contest in 2026, I am confident that his leadership will guide Uganda in the years to come. I strongly believe that he will eventually become the next president of Uganda, and I am committed to supporting that future vision.”

This move marks a significant departure for Kagabo, who has been a vocal member of the opposition under the NUP. His decision to join the NRM signals a shift in Uganda’s political landscape, as several prominent figures from opposition parties are now re-aligning themselves with the ruling party. Kagabo’s endorsement of the NRM is expected to strengthen the party’s position in Bukoto South, a constituency that has seen increasing political competition in recent years.

Kagabo’s announcement has already begun to stir reactions within political circles. Supporters of the NRM have welcomed his decision, viewing it as a reinforcement of the party’s growing influence and a testament to its enduring appeal across the country. However, his departure from the NUP has left many in the opposition questioning the future of the party’s influence in Bukoto South.

NUP leaders have yet to officially comment on Kagabo’s defection, but the move is likely to have significant implications for the party’s strategy leading up to the 2026 elections. Kagabo’s shift to the NRM could embolden other NUP members to follow suit, particularly in regions where the NRM has historically maintained strong support.

As the 2026 elections approach, Hon. Twaha Kagabo’s candidacy under the NRM banner will be closely watched. His decision to leave the NUP and align with the NRM, coupled with his continued support for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s long-term leadership prospects, reflects the evolving dynamics of Ugandan politics. Whether this shift will translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly marks a significant moment in Kagabo’s political career and the broader political landscape of Uganda.
