Peter Kawuki: Human Rights Defender and the New Face of Leadership in Mpigi DistrictPeter Kawuki is an opposition politician affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), a legal professional, human rights defender, and social justice activist whose leadership journey has been shaped by his commitment to defending vulnerable communities.
Born on November 28, 1986, to the late George William Ssetumba and Alice Mutesi Byogero, Kawuki rose from a humble background to become one of the notable political and legal voices in Mpigi District and Uganda at large.
He holds a Master of Laws in Cybersecurity and has built a reputation for using his legal expertise to fight social injustices, particularly cases related to land grabbing and human rights violations.Kawuki’s political journey began in the Democratic Party (DP), where he served as the Organizing Secretary for Mpigi District.
In 2011, he contested for the Mawokota South parliamentary seat, marking the beginning of his active participation in elective politics.Driven by his passion for serving humanity, Kawuki has remained deeply involved in community advocacy and social empowerment.
He is widely recognized for defending the poor against injustices and championing the rights of marginalized groups within Mpigi District and beyond.
Through his “Children’s Parliament” initiative, Kawuki has actively advocated for children’s rights, while also supporting orphans and vulnerable children to access education.
He has equally extended support to elderly persons and disadvantaged families, earning admiration from many communities.In 2018, Kawuki joined the People Power movement, where he served as the Coordinator for the Informal Sector in the Greater Mpigi region.
He later continued his political journey under the National Unity Platform, strengthening his role within Uganda’s opposition politics.Kawuki also recently served as the legal advisor for Mawokota Ssaza County, further cementing his influence in community leadership and legal affairs.
In the 2026 general elections, Peter Kawuki was elected Chairperson of Mpigi District on the NUP ticket, replacing former district chairperson Martine Ssejjemba.
His victory was welcomed by many residents who see him as a leader capable of restoring hope, accountability, and effective service delivery in the district.
Many people in Mpigi believe Kawuki’s long-standing experience in defending human rights, fighting land injustices, and standing with ordinary citizens positions him well to revive the district’s lost glory and champion the interests of the people.
