Uganda’s shida leni shines with record-breaking performances

Uganda’s rising sprint star Shida Leni has kicked off the 2025 athletics season in sensational form, breaking her own national records and setting her sights on global success. The 400m and 200m specialist has already made headlines with two standout performances this year.

On 12 April, Leni smashed her previous 400m national record of 51.47 seconds, storming to victory at an Athletics Kenya meeting in Nairobi with a time of 51.25 seconds. Just two weeks later, at the Uganda Athletics Federation’s 5th National Trial on 26 April, she showcased her versatility by clocking a personal best of 2:04.4 in the 800m, shaving over a second off her previous best of 2:05.08. This remarkable achievement is particularly notable for an athlete known primarily for shorter distances.

Leni’s gruelling training regime has clearly paid dividends, and her performances have raised expectations for a busy and exciting season ahead. On 31 May, she will compete in the 400m at the prestigious Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, a key event in her preparations for the European circuit. Her ultimate goals include securing qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September and contending for a medal at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 7 to 21 November.

“Shida is a phenomenal talent, and her dedication to her craft is unmatched,” said Kevin O’Connor, a close observer of her career. “Her tough training sets her apart, and she’s ready to make her mark on the global stage.”

As Leni continues to build on her early-season success, Uganda and the athletics world will be watching closely to see just how far this dynamic sprinter can go.
