Local Government Pushes for Digital Transformation in Market Management

The Minister for Local Government, Hon.Raphael Magyezi hosted a key meeting to explore the potential of automated market revenue collection and administration systems of government markets.

The proposed Automated revenue collection system will help collect data on market vendors, ensure compliance, and maximize revenue collection.

Magyezi called for digital solutions to increase revenue collection, improve market management, and ensure accountability.

“The government is the true landlord in these markets,” he stated, emphasizing that no one is supposed to sub rent or collect money from the vendors apart from the authorized officers.

As the Ministry of Local Government moves towards a fully digital approach, the future of market management in Uganda looks poised for a transformative shift, ensuring more efficient, transparent, and profitable operations.

The proposed automated revenue collection system was presented to the Hon. Raphael Magyezi , Hajji Sewante Khalifan ,Ag.Permanent Secretary, several commissioners and Local Government staff by Interswitch a digital payment and commerce company that operates in Uganda .

Hon. Raphael Magyezi, stressed the importance of leadership in driving positive change. He challenged leaders to make an impact in their communities, “How can you leave your town the same, or worse, after five years in office?”he asked.

Through the Market Agriculture Trade Improvement Program (MATIP), the government has invested in modern markets in cities like Kampala, Jinja, Gulu, and Mbarara, aiming to enhance infrastructure and promote economic and social transformation.
