Byanyima family holds Museveni Accountable for Besigye’s life amidst poor health company oncerns

In a strongly-worded statement during a press conference held today in Kampala, the Byanyima family has warned President Yoweri Museveni that he will be held responsible should anything happen to Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently detained in Luzira Prison. The conference was addressed by prominent family members, including Edith Byanyima and Victoria Byanyima, who expressed deep concern over Besigye’s health and the circumstances surrounding his detention.

The family revealed that they received an urgent call from Luzira Prison yesterday, requesting them to send Besigye’s personal doctor as his health had significantly deteriorated. The Byanyimas stated that this alarming development highlights the gravity of the situation, calling it a direct result of the conditions under which Besigye is being held.

Edith Byanyima emphasized that Besigye’s detention is unjust, asserting that he is a political prisoner. She argued that his continued incarceration and the lack of adequate medical attention constitute a blatant disregard for his rights and could have severe consequences on his health.

The family further urged Museveni’s government to ensure Besigye’s immediate access to proper medical care, warning that failure to do so would implicate the president directly should Besigye’s condition worsen. “We hold President Museveni accountable for Besigye’s safety and wellbeing,” Edith Byanyima stated firmly.

The press conference comes amidst growing concerns from the public and the opposition over the government’s treatment of political detainees. Dr. Kizza Besigye, a former presidential candidate and a fierce critic of President Museveni, has been a longtime advocate for political reform in Uganda, a stance that has often put him at odds with the regime.

The Byanyima family concluded their statement by calling upon both local and international stakeholders to demand accountability and ensure that Besigye receives the care and justice he deserves.
