Bobi Wine would be dead if we wanted him dead in Arua- Gen Nalweyiso

President Yoweri Museveni’s senior military advisor, Lt Gen Proscovia Nalweyiso has advised NUP Presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Bobi Wine to reign in his youthful supports to desist from violence in the ongoing election campaigns.

Gen Nalweyiso, the country’s most decorated female soldier, on Tuesday condemned last month’s protests in Kampala and other parts of the country, which were sparked by the arrest of Mr Bobi Wine in Luuka for allegedly flouting campaign guidelines.

Over 50 people were killed as police and the military battled the protesters on the streets.

Speaking this morning on UBC TV, Nalweyiso said the youths had no right to go to the streets to protest a mere arrest of a person, who they knew well was going to be safe in custody.

The NRM Government, Nalweyiso said, does not kill people in custody.

She added that if Government had any intention to kill Bobi Wine, it would have done so in 2018 during the Arua violence, when his supporters allegedly threw stones at the motorcade of President Yoweri Museveni.

“If I, Gen Nalweyiso was to be arrested, my people or even my fellow tribesmen the Baganda are not supposed to protest, and I would urge them not to protest because this government does not kill people in custody,” she said.

“There is no chance that Government is going to arrest Kyagulanyi and kill him. If we wanted to kill Kyagulanyi, we would have killed him in Arua.”

She added; “I have been with this president in the bush since 1981. A child that we raised and brought to where he is today, and he goes and throws a paver at a person we have been protecting from when we were in the bush? He would have died then; in fact, I was among the people who thought that Kyagulanyi would have died on that day!”

“But if he survived and we protected him until today when he is campaigning, and then we arrest him and you want to go and loot and burn people’s property… we are not going to allow that.”

Gen Nalweyiso stressed that Bobi Wine should focus on peacefully seeking the presidential mandate without rioting and looting, short of which, she said the national army will not allow him.

“We want them to come into leadership without touching anybody’s hard earned property. If they win, the president will hand them the constitution and get in his car and drive off to Rwakitura.”

Commenting on last month’s riots, Nalweyiso said the fact that Government has been pressed by Ugandans to explain the deaths and prosecute the shooters, was because of the prevailing peace and freedom ushered by the same government.

In previous governments, she said, no one was allowed to question extrajudicial killings including mass murders as was witnessed during the 1966 attack on the palace of the Kabaka of Buganda.
