Non-Negotiable LGBTQ community rights, the Activist’s responsibility in Uganda – Steven Kabuye

The LGBTQ community in Uganda has long been fighting for their basic human rights, including the right to live freely and without discrimination. #LGBTQ #WhisperEyNews

However, they have faced severe opposition from both the government and society, including the recent attempt to pass the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2023.

Despite the challenges, the fight for LGBTQ rights and equality continues in Uganda, and it is vital to understand the non-negotiable rights and responsibilities of all those fighting for them.

First and foremost, the LGBTQ community in Uganda has the same rights as every other Ugandan, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

These rights include the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They have the right to live without fear of persecution, discrimination, or violence based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The responsibility of those fighting for LGBTQ rights in Uganda is to ensure that these fundamental human rights are upheld and protected. They must work together to create an inclusive society that values diversity and treats everyone equally, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This includes advocacy for legal protection against discrimination, harassment, and victimization.

The LGBTQ community in Uganda also has the right to access basic services such as healthcare, education, and housing without facing any form of discrimination. They should be allowed to participate in all social and cultural activities without fear of persecution, and this responsibility falls on the shoulders of society as a whole.

Those fighting for LGBTQ rights in Uganda also have the responsibility to be inclusive and respectful of the diversity within the community. This includes recognizing and respecting the intersectionality of identities and ensuring that the voices of marginalized groups are heard and represented.

In conclusion, the fight for LGBTQ rights in Uganda is an ongoing struggle that requires the joint effort of all Ugandans. The unnegotiable rights of the LGBTQ community include living freely and without discrimination, access to basic services, and participation in social and cultural activities.

The responsibility of those fighting for their rights includes advocacy for legal protection against discrimination, creating an inclusive society, and recognizing the diversity within the community. It is only by upholding these fundamental rights and responsibilities that Uganda can become a just and equitable society for all.
