Top lawyer Isaac Kimeze Ssemakadde calls for accountability amid growing political support for Bobi Wine
In a fiery statement, prominent Ugandan activist and lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde has declared that the swelling support for opposition leader Bobi Wine is not driven by financial incentives but by the daily struggles of ordinary Ugandans.
Speaking out against the government’s tactics, Ssemakadde accused those in power of turning public service into a “family business” by prioritizing friends, relatives, and loyalists for key positions, leading to widespread disillusionment.
“Ugandans are rallying behind Bobi Wine because of the situation they are enduring every single day. That’s the fact,” Ssemakadde said on his meta account , emphasizing that citizens are frustrated with systemic issues like unemployment, corruption, and lack of opportunities. “Instead of arresting citizens for speaking out, those in power should fix themselves.”
Ssemakadde’s remarks come amid reports of increasing arrests and harassment of opposition supporters, particularly those aligned with Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP).
The government has faced criticism for cracking down on dissent, with many accusing it of stifling free speech and targeting activists who demand reform.
“Accountability, not repression, is what Uganda needs,” Ssemakadde urged, pointing to the growing discontent with what he described as a government that has lost touch with its people.
He warned that the country is “slipping out of their hands” as public frustration fuels support for opposition figures like Bobi Wine, a popstar-turned-politician who has become a symbol of resistance against President Yoweri Museveni’s decades-long rule.
The activist’s comments have sparked reactions across social media platforms, with many Ugandans echoing his call for transparency and reform. However, government have yet to respond to Ssemakadde’s allegations of nepotism and mismanagement.
As Uganda approaches another election , the tension between the government and opposition supporters continues to escalate.
Analysts warn that without addressing the root causes of public discontent, the country risks further instability. For now, Ssemakadde’s bold statement has amplified the voices of those demanding change, placing the spotlight firmly on the need for accountability in Uganda’s leadership.
