FDC to Elect Presidential Flag Bearer on July 31st as Amuriat, Mafabi Face Off in Pivotal Race

FDC to Elect Presidential Flag Bearer on July 31st as Amuriat, Mafabi Face Off in Pivotal Race

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is set to elect its presidential flag bearer for the 2026 general elections on Thursday, July 31st, 2025, in what is expected to be a defining moment for Uganda’s once leading opposition party.

The announcement was officially made by FDC spokesperson John Kikonyogo, who confirmed that the election will take place during the party’s national delegates’ conference scheduled for that day.

The race for the party’s top ticket has narrowed down to two influential party stalwarts Hon. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the incumbent party president and former presidential candidate in 2021, and Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the party’s Secretary General and a long time Member of Parliament for Budadiri West.

Over 1,500 delegates from across the country are expected to converge for the crucial meeting at the party headquarters to cast their vote and decide who will carry the FDC flag into the 2026 presidential contest. The delegates’ conference will also serve as a strategic platform to discuss the party’s roadmap, unity, and campaign strategy ahead of a highly anticipated election season.

This internal contest is already drawing public attention, given the historical tensions and ideological differences between the two candidates, which have previously fueled internal divisions within the party. Analysts say the outcome of this election could redefine the future direction and cohesion of FDC.

The FDC, founded in 2004, has been one of Uganda’s most formidable opposition forces and has previously fronted strong presidential candidates such as Dr. Kizza Besigye. With Dr. Besigye not participating in this race, the spotlight now firmly rests on Amuriat and Mafabi to shape the party’s next chapter.

More updates are expected as the delegates’ conference nears and the party prepares for one of its most significant elections in recent years.
