NUP Officially Nominates Bobi Wine as Party 2026 Presidential Flag Bearer

Kampala, Uganda | June 25, 2025

The political landscape in Uganda has taken a defining turn as Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was today officially nominated by the National Unity Platform (NUP) to carry the party’s presidential flag in the 2026 general elections.

The long-awaited announcement was made during a grand and emotional ceremony held at the NUP headquarters in Kavule, Kawempe Division, Kampala, which was transformed into a sea of red as thousands of party supporters, well-wishers, and local leaders turned up in massive numbers to witness what many described as “a fresh chapter in Uganda’s democratic struggle.”

Accompanied by his wife, Hon. Barbie Kyagulanyi, and their son Shadraq Mbogo Kyagulanyi, Bobi Wine arrived at the party offices to roaring cheers from a charged crowd. The presence of his family added a powerful emotional dimension to the day, symbolizing unity, sacrifice, and the deeply personal nature of the journey he has taken since joining active politics.

The trio was welcomed by the NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, and members of the party’s top leadership from all four regions of Uganda.

Addressing the crowds shortly after his nomination, Bobi Wine stood firm and confident, declaring that this moment was not just about his personal ambition but about the collective dream of millions of Ugandans seeking change.

“This is not just my nomination; it is a nomination of the Ugandan people especially the poor, the voiceless, and the oppressed. We are on a mission to liberate our nation from decades of impunity, corruption, and misrule,” Kyagulanyi said, drawing wild applause.

He vowed to run a peaceful but defiant campaign under the theme “Protest Vote”, a slogan that has become the rallying cry for his movement.

The NUP Electoral Commission confirmed that Bobi Wine was the sole nominee for the presidential flag and that he had received overwhelming endorsement.

“We are proud to present a candidate who not only commands the love of the people but represents a true break from the past. Bobi Wine is the face of the new Uganda.”

Meanwhile, buses and trucks from as far as Arua, Mbale, Gulu, Hoima, Masaka, and Mbarara were seen arriving in Kavule as early as 6:00 AM, offloading NUP supporters eager to witness the landmark event. Security teams, both private and state, kept a watchful eye, but the event remained peaceful and orderly.

With today’s nomination, Bobi Wine now officially becomes the top challenger to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power since 1986 and is widely expected to seek a seventh term in office.

This will mark Bobi Wine’s second run for the presidency after a groundbreaking 2021 campaign where he emerged as the leading opposition figure, despite contesting in what he termed a “militarized and rigged election.”

Political analysts say his re-nomination re-energizes the youth and urban vote, positioning him once again as a formidable force against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The mood at Kavule today was one of renewed hope. Supporters waved placards reading “Bobi Wine 2026 Our President”, “We Are Removing a Dictator”, and “The Ghetto is Ready.” Others chanted songs of liberation as motorcycles, bicycles, and taxis hooted in support.

Youth leaders, cultural icons, musicians, women’s groups, and religious figures were also present to show solidarity.

“This isn’t just politics anymore. This is destiny,” shouted one supporter, a youth leader from Lira. “Bobi Wine represents all of us who want a better future.”

As Uganda marches toward 2026, the battle lines are being drawn. Bobi Wine’s nomination sets the tone for what is expected to be a high stakes election that will test the strength of institutions, the resilience of the opposition, and the will of the Ugandan people.

Today’s event was not just a nomination it was a declaration. A statement that the struggle for freedom, democracy, and justice is far from over.

And at the center of it all stands a former pop star turned political giant, now officially Uganda’s leading opposition candidate: Bobi Wine.
