Authorities in Zombo district have issued a stern warning to National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates against ferrying supporters to the polling station at Zombo Upper Primary School playground in Zombo Town Council for the upcoming election of district party structure leaders, scheduled for May 23, 2025.
Zombo’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Festus Ayikobua, emphasized that only voters listed on the official NRM electoral register, provided by the party’s electoral officer, will be allowed access to the polling area.
He cautioned candidates against mobilizing supporters to the venue, noting that robust security measures will be in place to prevent potential violence or disruptions.
“On May 23, 2025, the NRM district structure elections will take place. I urge candidates not to bring supporters to the polling station,” Ayikobua stated. “Security forces will ensure only registered voters access the election area, as per the list provided by the NRM electoral officer. All measures are in place to guarantee a peaceful electoral process.”
The election will utilize an electoral college voting system, with voters and candidates expected to arrive between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM.
This will be followed by brief campaign speeches and the casting of ballots for various leadership positions within the district party structure.
Prisca Onegiu, the Zombo District NRM registrar, confirmed receiving reports that some candidates plan to bus in supporters, a practice she described as strictly prohibited.
She assured that the electoral process will be free, fair, and transparent, urging candidates to arrive early to ensure a smooth voting process.
The highly contested positions include the NRM District Chairperson, with incumbent Tom Joram and District Council Speaker Hassan Ringtho among the candidates, and the Secretary General post, contested by vocal NRM mobilizer Stephen Okwaimungu and incumbent Boris Ringtho.
Hassan Ringtho, one of the candidates believe a peaceful election enhances public trust in the process, promotes civic engagement, and sets a positive precedent for future democratic exercises, ultimately benefiting the entire community of Zombo district.
Authorities say a peaceful campaign and election process will foster unity, strengthens democratic principles, and ensures a credible outcome that reflects the true will of the voters.
