By Mike Rwothomio

The Alur Kingdom has received 436 bursary offers for its young

people to undertake various vocational courses at Erussi Institute  of Science and Technology (EISS), and Fountain head Institute of

Management and Technology, respectively.

Erussi Institute of Science and Technology, located in Padolo

Parish ,  Erussi Sub-county,  Nebbi District, has offered 100

bursaries to Alur Kingdom.

The courses offered were listed in a  press release issued by Alur  Kingdom’s communication officer David Rupiny,  on March 12, 2025.

The courses offered at EISS are

National Diploma in Crop Production and Management, National

Certificate in Agriculture Production and Management, National

Certificate in Building Construction, and National Certificate in

Fashion and Garment Design.

On the other hand, Fountainhead Institute of Management and

Technology, located in Lira City West Division,  Lira City, has

offered Alur Kingdom 336 bursaries, i.e. six bursaries for each of  the 56 Chiefdoms that constitute the Kingdom.

The courses offered at Fountainhead Institute of Management and

Technology are the National Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, respectively.

Others are National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical

Engineering, Animal Production and Management, Record and

Information Management, Accounting and Finance, Crop

Production and Management, Fashion and Garment Design,

respectively.

Performing Arts, Accounting and Finance, Agricultural Production

and Management, Petroleum Logistics Management, Electrical

Installation and Maintenance, and Record and Information

Management, respectively.

Alur kingdom   youth are renowned for being highly enterprising but majority stay idle and are not employed.

In Uganda , 52% are working for themselves only, and 43% are unpaid family workers. About 77% of the population aged 15 – 64 work. Unemployment is negligible at 3.2% for the adult population and 5.3% for youth, according to world bank.

Commenting on the bursaries offer, the Principal of Erussi

Institute of Science and Technology, Darius Ekwang, observed that  the

admission qualification is in line with Uganda Business and

Technical Education standards.

Ekwang noted that  the numerous  challenges parents and

students go through in accessing quality education , prompted  them  to strategically establish the Institute in  Erussi Sub-county, to directly  meet the needs of the people in Alur Kingdom.

“The costs involved in studying at Erussi Institute of Sciences and

Technology are also moderate to encourage more enrolment of

students from disadvantaged families”,  Ekwang said in parts.

Around 700,000 young people reach working age every year in Uganda. This is expected to rise to an average of one million in the decade from 2030-2040, and it is  already creating a mismatch between labour demand and supply, according to figures from world bank.

The Prime Minister of Alur Kingdom, Prince Lawrence Opar

Angala, welcomes the bursary offers, which he says will go a long

way in skilling young people in the Kingdom and make them

employable, leading to the transformation of the Kingdom.

The Cultural Minister of Education and Environment, Dr. Sarah

Akello, appeals to those interested in accessing the bursaries to

contact the Kingdom as soon as possible through the listed contacts.

The offers has come timely, given the Kingdom’s intensified efforts it has laid in fighting poverty, improving education and promoting social welfare of it’s subjects.

On the flip side, the  coming in of Erussi Institute of Science and Technology, is viewed as a blessing in Alur land, given the limited number of institutions in the area.

Subjects are being rallied to seize this available opportunities for transformation.
