Hajati Faridah Nambi Named NRM Flag Bearer for Kawempe North By-Election

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has selected Hajati Faridah Nambi as its flag bearer for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, scheduled for March 13, 2025. The announcement was made by the NRM Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi, at the party’s headquarters in Kampala.

Hajati Nambi is no stranger to Kampala’s political landscape. In the 2021 general elections, she contested for the Kampala Woman Member of Parliament seat, where she emerged as the first runner-up, closely behind the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Shamim Malende. Notably, during the NRM primaries for that election, Nambi secured a significant number of votes from Kawempe Division, one of the key areas within Kampala.

Her previous campaign efforts have provided her with a substantial support base in Kawempe, positioning her advantageously for the forthcoming by-election. Her deep-rooted connections and understanding of the constituency’s dynamics are expected to play a pivotal role in her campaign strategy.

The Kawempe North seat became vacant following the untimely death of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, 2025. The Electoral Commission has since set the by-election date and released a roadmap leading up to the polls.

As the political atmosphere intensifies, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has also initiated its process to select a candidate for the same seat. The party has called for expressions of interest from its members, signaling a competitive race ahead.

Hajati Nambi’s candidacy underscores the NRM’s commitment to fielding experienced and well-connected individuals in key electoral contests. Her prior political engagements and established presence in Kawempe are anticipated to bolster her campaign as she vies to represent the constituency in the national parliament.
