Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, a highly esteemed entrepreneur and philanthropist in Uganda, was awarded the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer) by President Yoweri Museveni during the 39th NRM/A Victory Day Anniversary celebrations held in Mubende District on Sunday.
This prestigious honor, established under the National Honours and Awards Act (2001, as amended), is given to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service in both the public and private sectors.
Adding to the family’s pride, Dr. Ruparelia’s daughter, Sheena Ruparelia, was also awarded a medal in recognition of her noteworthy contributions. A successful businesswoman, Sheena has played a vital role in the growth and management of the Ruparelia Group, significantly contributing to its achievements.
Dr. Ruparelia’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming a leading entrepreneur is a remarkable tale of resilience and visionary leadership. With limited initial capital, he founded the Ruparelia Group, which has grown into a diverse conglomerate operating in real estate, financial services, education, hospitality, agriculture, and media. Today, the group is a major pillar of Uganda’s economy, employing over 8,000 people and ranking among the nation’s leading taxpayers.
Beyond his business successes, Dr. Ruparelia is deeply committed to philanthropy. As Chairman of the Ruparelia Foundation, he has championed initiatives in healthcare, education, wildlife conservation, and poverty alleviation, contributing more than $1 million to various causes. His investments in education, such as Kampala International School and Kampala Parents’ School, have raised the bar for quality education in Uganda.
Dr. Ruparelia’s impact also extends internationally through his hospitality ventures, such as Speke Resort Munyonyo, which have hosted significant global events. These include the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and the NAM and G77+ China Summits, showcasing Uganda on the global stage. These efforts were central to his recent recognition.
This latest accolade adds to Dr. Ruparelia’s history of honors, including an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Uganda Pentecostal University and the Golden Jubilee Independence Medal, which acknowledged his outstanding contributions to investment in Uganda.
