State, NUP Clash Over Muhammad Ssegirinya’s Body During Burial ceremony

The burial of former Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya, turned into a heated political spectacle as the State and the National Unity Platform (NUP) wrestled for control over the burial arrangements.

NUP under President Robert Kyagulanyi had organized a final send off ceremony of Hon Ssegirinya at his ancestral home in Kadugala. However a parallel event was alsp organized ar Butale grounds by parliament with Hon Mpuuga Nsamba as the chairman.

At some point, Police and NUP foots soldiers clashed as Police tried to take the body to Butale grounds allegedly on orders of Speaker Anita Among who was coordinating the matters on phone.

The unfortunate passing of Ssegirinya, a vocal opposition politician, had already sent shockwaves across Uganda, but the drama that unfolded at his final send-off left the nation divided.

At Butale grounds where Mpuuga stood tall, he expressed dissatisfaction about the behavior of NUP saying that they couldn’t respect the request of Hon Ssegirinya’s mother to have the body taken to the official grounds for final send prayers.

He added that NUP once again have shown their level of immaturity attributing it to failure by the NUP leadership to separate politics from events like a burial ceremony.

Ssegirinya, known for his resilience and activism, succumbed to health complications after a prolonged battle exacerbated by his incarceration in 2021. His death reignited debates about the alleged mistreatment of opposition figures in Uganda. As his body arrived in Kawempe for final respects, a political battle took center stage, overshadowing the somber occasion.

As one of NUP’s most prominent figures, Ssegirinya had always been at the forefront of the party’s efforts to advocate for change. The party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), had planned a burial ceremony reflective of Ssegirinya’s values and contribution to the fight for democracy. NUP’s leadership insisted that the burial would not only celebrate his life but also highlight the ongoing plight of opposition figures in the country.

NUP organized vigils, coordinated transport for mourners, and mobilized supporters to give their fallen comrade a befitting send-off. However, their plans hit a roadblock when government officials intervened, citing national security concerns and claiming the burial should remain apolitical.

Despite the heightened tensions, thousands gathered to pay their respects. NUP supporters, donning red berets and T-shirts bearing Ssegirinya’s image, chanted slogans in his honor. Bobi Wine, addressing mourners, accused the government of being responsible for Ssegirinya’s death, alleging that his imprisonment and subsequent health complications were politically motivated.

The government dismissed these claims, emphasizing that Ssegirinya had received medical attention while in custody and blaming his death on pre-existing conditions. However, their narrative did little to sway the crowd, which largely sided with NUP’s account of events.

The clash over Ssegirinya’s burial is a stark reminder of the deep divisions within Uganda’s political landscape. For NUP, the battle for Ssegirinya’s legacy is part of a broader fight against what they perceive as an oppressive regime. For the State, maintaining control over such events is a matter of national stability.

As the dust settles, questions linger about the treatment of opposition figures and the role of politics in Uganda’s governance. Ssegirinya’s death has become more than just the loss of a politician; it is a symbol of the ongoing struggle for freedom, justice, and democracy in the country.

The late MP may have been laid to rest, but the issues he stood for remain alive, continuing to ignite conversations about Uganda’s political future.
