A bitter dispute has erupted between Speaker of KCCA, Rt Hon Zahara Ruyirika, and Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago over the expired KCCA FC Board tenure. The board’s one year tenure expired 4 months ago, rendering its continued operation illegal.
During the last council seating of the year on December 17th, 2024, councilors expected to resolve the long-standing issue. However, Lord Mayor Lukwago, who is also the patron of KCCA FC, and his executive failed to appear before the council to table the new board members for approval. This absence has sparked concerns about the future of the football club.
Speaker Ruyirika expressed her disappointment and frustration, stating that the Lord Mayor and his group deliberately refused to attend the meeting. She emphasized that the current board’s illegal operation puts the existence of KCCA FC in jeopardy.
“As the board handles critical issues, including financial matters, it cannot be allowed to continue operating outside the law.” she said.
Ruyirika vowed that the council will wait for the Lord Mayor and his executive committee to present new board members. However, she made it clear that the old board will not be permitted to continue its duties.
The reasons behind Lord Mayor Lukwago’s absence and failure to communicate with the council remain unclear but some sources say that it could be related to the delays in the stadium construction project. This development has raised questions about the leadership and management of KCCA FC.
The now illegal KCCA board consists of ENG. Sserunjoji Andrew Mukiibi (Chairman), Owek. Ivan Kiirya (Treasurer), Owek. Joseph Kirimanyi (Auditor), Mr. Paul Mugambe (Mayor representative), Hon Jeremiah Keeya Mwanje ( authority Councilor), Hon Nusifah Nakato ( authority councilor), Mr. Tom Lwanga (club legend), Mr. Jackson Mayanja ( club legend) and Mr. Peter Kibazo (fans representative).
We tried to reach the Lord Mayor on his known contacts for a comment but he did not respond.
As the situation unfolds, one thing is certain: the future of KCCA FC hangs in the balance as now club is allowed to participate in the Uganda Premier League without a functioning board. The council’s decision to wait for the Lord Mayor’s response will be closely watched, and the outcome will have significant implications for the football club and its fans.
