Whisper Eye has learnt , In a significant blow to illicit trade, Ugandan authorities have apprehended a key figure in a phone smuggling operation in Kampala, seizing phones that would have evaded taxes amounting to UGX 1.9 billion, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) announced.
The operation led by URA’s Team One was sparked by intelligence provided by a confidential informant, guiding the enforcement team to a warehouse in the Old Kampala area. Here, they discovered and impounded over 3,800 uncustomed mobile phones of various brands. One individual working at the facility was arrested to assist with ongoing investigations into this smuggling network.
The smuggling of mobile phones has become a lucrative business in Uganda, exploiting the high demand for affordable smartphones in a market where penetration is significant. With an estimated 30 million mobile subscribers in a population of over 50 million, the need for cost-effective communication devices is clear. However, this demand has been met with an underground supply chain where phones bypass customs duties, sourced from countries like China, Dubai, and neighboring Kenya, to be sold at reduced prices on the black market.
