Museveni appoints Hon Kiwanda as National Chairman of the National Consultative Forum

31st October 2024, Entebbe, Uganda

In a significant reshuffle within Uganda’s political leadership, President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Godfrey Kiwanda as the new National Chairman of the National Consultative Forum (NCF). Kiwanda succeeds Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, whose term has recently concluded. The announcement was made today during the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, held at State House in Entebbe.

The National Consultative Forum, a constitutional body established to foster dialogue among Uganda’s political entities, represents a unique institution in the country’s political framework. Comprised of political parties with parliamentary representation, the Forum provides a platform for harmonizing ideologies and fostering collaboration. The Chairman’s role is thus pivotal in cultivating unity and dialogue across Uganda’s political spectrum, particularly given the diverse perspectives represented in Parliament.

Kiwanda’s mandate as Chairman will involve promoting peace and cohesion among Uganda’s political factions. This is particularly critical in the current political climate, where cross-party dialogue is essential for national development and stability. Known for his previous roles in the tourism and youth sectors, Kiwanda is expected to bring an inclusive approach to the Forum, focusing on bridging gaps among parties and enhancing mutual understanding.

In an interesting twist, Kiwanda will be deputized by a representative from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s main opposition party. This appointment is notable as it signals a deliberate effort to balance representation and foster bipartisan cooperation within the Forum’s leadership. While specific details about the NUP representative were not disclosed, their presence in a deputy role underscores a shift towards a more inclusive and cooperative approach in Ugandan politics.

The NRM’s CEC meeting, where this announcement was formalized, is a critical decision-making platform within the ruling party, often shaping Uganda’s broader political landscape. President Museveni’s choice reflects his continued emphasis on stability through structured, inter-party dialogue as Uganda heads into future elections.

As Kiwanda assumes his new role, expectations are high for effective and inclusive engagement across Uganda’s political spectrum. Many observers hope that the new leadership structure at the National Consultative Forum will support Uganda’s democratic processes and foster meaningful collaboration among political parties in Parliament.
