Bobi Wine’s NUP reacts to Masaka political rally and Police ban

In the wake of their recent event in Masaka, the National Unity Platform (NUP) has issued a resolute response, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support while condemning perceived unfair treatment by the authorities.

The NUP, in a statement released today, extended heartfelt appreciation to the people of Masaka for the “record reception” they received on Friday, May 31st, 2024. The party commended attendees for displaying resilience and unwavering commitment to their cause despite facing various challenges.

However, amidst the jubilation, tragedy struck as three Ugandans lost their lives in an accident near Maya. While the NUP expressed condolences to the bereaved families, they also called for an independent and expeditious investigation into the incident. The party emphasized that the accident occurred after their convoy had left the scene, challenging the police to establish the true cause.

The statement went on to criticize the police’s response, particularly condemning a recent announcement by Mr. Fred Enanga imposing a blanket ban on NUP activities. The NUP accused the police of exhibiting partisan behavior, citing instances where other political groups aligned with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) conducted activities without facing similar restrictions.

“We take strong exception to the partisan, illegal statement by the police,” the statement read. “Regrettably, they continue to act in a clearly partisan manner.”

Despite their grievances, the NUP reaffirmed their commitment to engaging with the authorities as law-abiding citizens. As a gesture of respect for the deceased, the party announced the postponement of their scheduled activity in Mityana, promising to release a new schedule in due course.

The NUP concluded the statement by assuring the people of Uganda that they remain steadfast in their mission, declaring, “the revolutionary train will reach them in all corners of the country – one way or another.”

The response from the NUP underscores the ongoing tensions between opposition parties and the government, highlighting the complexities of political dynamics in Uganda. As investigations into the accident continue, the country awaits further developments in this unfolding saga.
