Hundreds of residents of Arisi Village, Otheko Parish Paidha Sub county Zombo district are homeless, after their huts were set alight following the reported murder of a woman whose lifeless body was discovered dumped in the nearby bush along Nebbi-Pagisi road on Thursday , 9 May 2024.
The deceased aged 67, has been identified as Btea Anewa , a resident of Arisi Village.
The LC III chairperson of Paidha Sub-County William Okethi confirmed that the deceased was ” reportedly involved in a protracted land disputes with her family members”
He added that ” the relatives from her ancestral home from Kalwang in Nebbi Sub county, Nebbi District upon learning of the death of their own , immediately attacked their inlaws, destroying 57 huts and looting properties like goats , iron sheets, goats amongst others”.
The District Police Commander of Nebbi ASP Aminsi Kayondo said they immediately responded upon getting information about the incident and arrested seven suspects to aid in the investigation.
He revealed that ” the act was so barbaric and the seven suspects will be transferred to the DPC of Zombo”.
Many homeless residents have appealed for support from government and well-wishers.
Simmilarly last year in may, more than 70 huts were torched in retaliation in Otheko Parish Paidha Sub county Zombo District, following the murder of two youths with hearing impairment, who were accused of stealing goats.
Relatedly last year, More than 200 huts were set alight in Aka Subcounty Zombo District in retaliation, following the reported murder of The chairperson Zombo Tea growers cooperative union.
