In anticipation of World International Theatre Day, the National Theatre is gearing up to host a captivating production of “Over My Dead Body,” written by acclaimed playwright Violet Birungi.
This compelling play, exploring themes of familial conflict and personal ambition, promises to captivate audiences with its poignant narrative and dynamic characters.
“Over My Dead Body” follows the story of Boona, a young woman on a quest for marriage, whose aspirations are met with opposition from her father. Despite the unwavering support of her mother, Boona faces a significant hurdle as her father insists on prioritizing her education over marital pursuits.
The play delves into the complexities of tradition, generational differences, and the pursuit of individual dreams within the family dynamic.
The play is sponsored by St Lawrence university among others which has provided financial support towards its production.
Violet Birungi, the mastermind behind “Over My Dead Body,” is no stranger to the literary world. Born in Mbarara, Uganda, in 1943, Birungi has established herself as a versatile writer, excelling in playwriting, novel writing, and short story crafting.
With a BA in History from Kampala’s Makerere University, Birungi’s literary journey has been marked by numerous accolades and achievements. Her dedication to storytelling shines through in “Over My Dead Body,” a product of the British Council International New Publishing Award for Africa and the Middle East.
Despite facing challenges such as the absence of a computer and the lack of proofreading, Birungi’s talent and creativity prevailed, earning her recognition and an award in 2000 for “Over My Dead Body.” While she has written many plays, Birungi identifies primarily as a novelist, further underscoring the depth and complexity of her storytelling abilities.
Directed by the esteemed Wandyaka Richard, “Over My Dead Body” promises to be a highlight of the World International Theatre Day celebrations at the National Theatre on March 27, 2024.
Richard, a graduate of Makerere University with a Bachelor’s degree in Drama and Film, brings his expertise in directing to the production, ensuring a captivating and memorable theatrical experience for audiences.
With its powerful themes, compelling narrative, and talented cast and crew, “Over My Dead Body” is poised to leave a lasting impact on audiences, further solidifying Violet Birungi’s legacy as a formidable force in Ugandan literature and theatre.
