Nebbi Primary School in Nebbi Municipality is shrouded in grief today following the sudden demise of one of its esteemed educators, Amia Grace Ongiertho. Mrs Ongiertho, a dedicated teacher, breathed her last at Nebbi General Hospital earlier today after a brief illness.
The late Mrs. Ongiertho was not only a pillar of the educational community but also the beloved wife of Ongiertho Emmy, the esteemed Member of Parliament for Jonam County in Pakwach District. News of her passing has elicited an outpouring of condolences on various social media platforms.
Confirming the heartbreaking news, Nebbi District LCV Chairperson Emmanuel Orombi expressed his condolences and shed light on the circumstances surrounding her passing. “We’ve lost our mother and neighbor, Madam Amia Grace Ongiertho, wife to Honorable Emmanuel Ongiertho, MP for Jonam County and a teacher at Nebbi Primary School. After a short illness, we observed symptoms of breathing difficulty,” he shared on his Facebook page, promising further details in due course.
This loss comes against the backdrop of a broader challenge facing the education sector in Uganda. Last year, the Ugandan National Teachers Union (UNATU) released a report highlighting the loss of 1,278 teachers between 2021 and 2023, underscoring the significant teaching gap experienced in the country.
As Nebbi mourns the passing of Mrs. Amia Grace Ongiertho, her contributions to education and her community will be remembered fondly, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.
