First Lady Janet Museveni Commends Businessman Hamis Kiggundu for Nakivubo Stadium Development

In a significant nod to private sector involvement in national development, the First Lady of Uganda, Janet Kataaha Museveni, also serving as the Minister for Education and Sports, has lauded businessman Hamis Kiggundu for his pivotal role in transforming Nakivubo Stadium to modern standards.

Addressing attendees during her visit to the state-of-the-art Nakivubo Stadium, Mrs Museveni expressed pride in witnessing the initiative of young entrepreneurs contributing to Uganda’s development. She commended Ham Kiggundu for his remarkable efforts, citing the stadium as a testament to the potential of Uganda’s youth.

“The NRM government is very proud to see the example of our young people beginning to build Uganda by putting up projects such as this one. We congratulate Ham Kiggundu for this excellent job,” Mrs. Museveni remarked.

The newly refurbished Nakivubo Stadium, valued at a staggering 54 billion Ugandan shillings, boasts a modern pitch, two suspended floors, a two-level pavilion, netball grounds, and a roof. With a seating capacity of 35,000, the facility is poised to host various sporting events, including athletics, netball, and bodybuilding.

Furthermore, Nakivubo Stadium’s significance has been amplified by Uganda’s successful bid to co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Kenya and Tanzania. The stadium is slated to be one of the venues for this prestigious tournament, underscoring its pivotal role in the country’s sports infrastructure.

Despite facing scepticism and criticism from detractors, Hamis Kiggundu remains resolute in his vision for Nakivubo Stadium. He dismissed negativity surrounding the project, attributing it to ignorance and hate. Kiggundu emphasized his commitment to seeing the 54 billion shilling project through to completion, undeterred by distractions or naysayers.

“The problem is that many of our people have so much negativity… Some do it out of ignorance whereas others do it out of hate. One thing I do different from others is reason,” Kiggundu asserted, reaffirming his dedication to the transformative project.

As Nakivubo Stadium emerges as a symbol of progress and innovation in Uganda’s sporting landscape, the commendation from First Lady Janet Museveni serves as a testament to the power of collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving national development.
