Locals have received with shock the tragic news of the death by drowning of two students with hearing loss on River Nyagak in Acoru Village, Oyeyu Parish Nyapea Sub-county Zombo District.
The two were former students of St Francis School of Deaf located in Nyapea Sub-county.
The two had visited their colleagues at the school. It’s reported that from the school, they decided to go for a swimming activity in the company of six.
The identities of the two were not revealed by press time as getting a response from the administrators of St Francis School of Deaf proved futile by press time.
The councillor of Oyeyu Parish Joe Ubedgiu confirmed the news to Whisper Eye on Saturday evening.
Ubedgiu said “The two met their deaths on Saturday afternoon when they went with colleagues to pass time in a swimming activity on River Nyagak in Acoru village, Oyeyu Parish Nyapea Sub-county”
He said, ” Out of the six, two died on the spot and one person was pressurized upon seeing his colleagues drowning, He was rescued by locals and is currently receiving first aid at Nyapea Hospital, whilst the other three colleagues raised alarm that attracted locals to the crime scene”.
By press time, police from Paidha central police station had retrieved the bodies and rushed for autopsy local leaders reported to whispereye news.
The LC3 chairperson of Nyapea Sub-County Constatino Omwon condoled with the bereaved families and called for strict policies and regulations in schools for the deaf to avoid the student rampant movement.
In May last year, Two persons with hearing loss were killed by an unknown angry mob in Labora village, Otheko Parish Paidha Sub-County, on allegations of theft.
Last year, one person died by drowning on River Nyagak in Jangokoro Sub-county, and two mothers also died by drowning on River Nyagak in Nyagak Paa Bruno Bridge in Anyola Parish Atyak Sub County.
Between 2016 and 2018, over 1300 people from 60 lake and non-lake districts in Uganda died by drowning as per the 2021 statistics published by Makerere University School of Public Health.
