Zombo district which is at the Uganda – DR Congo border, for long,  has been witnessing frequent cases of Motorcycle theft.

These stolen Motorcycles are later sold in Eastern  DR Congo due to the porous nature of the over 20  border crossing points.

During the presentation of their report to the Journalists of Zombo Press Association at Daudi Cotts recently, The Incharge Traffick, at the association Acelam said:” We have earmarked places like Meira valley in Dwonga ward Paidha town council, Oturgang mission area in Oturgang ward, Corner Basi in Kaya, Road connecting Congambe and Mavura in Jangokoro Sub_county, Ora river bridge in Alangi Sub_county, Pei Osi in Warr, Nyagak forest area that cut across Paidha town council, Nyapea and Abanga Sub_Counties”.

According to the leadership, a total of 20 Motorcycles were stolen on those hotspots named.

Acelam stated that all motorcycle robberies take place at night hours when some riders are hit badly by the gangsters before making off with the motorcycles.

Zombo district Boda Boda association has more than 1500 registered members.

From January to May this year, records from the leadership indicated that a total of 20 boda boda riders have “lost their Motorcycles” to thugs,  out of which one person was hit badly and later lost his life.

The chairperson of Zombo District Boda Boda Association Fred Onenarach has called upon members, to desist from night operations which he noted is more riskier.

“Since all these robberies are happening at night, I would like to appeal to the riders to avoid night movements in far-off areas,” Onenarach said.

The 2022 Police annual crime report indicated that 2, 614 stolen Motorcycles in Uganda were not recovered, whilst 2,381 were recovered out of the 5,509 Motorcycles that were reportedly stolen.

Recently, two people who reportedly stole Motorcycles from Kampala city were arrested in Ngothe town in DR Congo. They were later handed back to Ugandan Authorities,  and briefly detained at Paidha central police station in Zombo before being transported back to Kampala Central Police Station.
