Uganda climate change activists in US stage stop EACOP protests

Uganda climate change activists in the United States of America have staged protests at the Embassy of France and China in the US, asking Total Energies company and CNOOC to pull out of the construction of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

The protest led by Hillary Taylor and Counsel Isaac Ssemakadde mobilized hundreds of Ugandans protesting the construction of EACOP from Hoima Uganda to Tanga on the Indian Ocean in Tanzania.

Total Energies is a french oil company and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) is one of the largest national oil companies in China.

Ugandans demand the two countries France and China stop these companies from constructing EACOP saying that the project is a curse to Uganda and East Africa.

On its completion, EACOP will be the longest heated oil pipeline in the world with 1,443km from Hoima Uganda to Tanga on the Tanzanian coastline.
According to calculations based on the specific fuel density of the EACOP blend, the emissions from the burning of this fuel would be at least 34.3 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent (CO2e) per year.

And the carbon emissions are expected to escalate the diverse effects of climate change in the region.
