A gratuity fee is a sum of money paid to an employee at the end of a period of employment. MPs will receive this money as an appreciation fee for their work done in the first year of their 5 year term.
This has been confirmed by the Kasambya County MP Hon David K Kabanda using his official Twitter handle who was clearing the air that the MPs had not yet pocketed the money but it was yet to happen.
“The 40M Ndugu @OfwonoOpondo is referring to is what we get as gratuity. Unfortunately, it hasn’t come yet, but when it comes all MPs will receive it because they’re entitled to it.” Kabanda wrote
Yesterday government spokesperson Mr. Ofwono Opondo had alleged that the MPs had already received this money.
Many Ugandans who have been squeezed by the harsh economic crisis are so furious with how the institution of parliament is making its life better at expense of the taxpayer who is suffering.
On top of the gratuity fee, MPs also allocated an extra 193 billion shillings inform of salary increments starting the next financial year with each MP set to have his salary and allowances increase by over 30 million shillings.
Information from inside sources shows that the planned salary increment was brought to address the ever-increasing costs of living with many MPs claiming that what they were earning was no longer enough.
