The founding president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Mzee Moses Kibalama led a coup that ousted former Kyadondo East legislator Hon Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert popularly known as Bobi Wine from party presidency during the delegates conference that sat on Friday 27th May 2022, in Mukono. #WhisperEyeNews
In July 2019, NUP led by Mzee Kibalama reached an agreement after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the People Power Movement led by Hon Kyagulanyi, held a delegates conference, and elected Mr. Wine as the party president for five years.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding, the two parties were to review the MOU after two years and elect new leadership. Mzee Kibalama and the group claim that Mr. Wine and his group breached the agreement and since then they have failed to review the MOU, nor elect new leadership.
According to Mzee Kibalama, the Central Exercise Committee resolved to hold a delegates conference on Friday 27th May 2022, thus electing new leadership.
During the delegate’s conference, Mzee Moses Kibalama was elected as the new party president replacing Mr. Wine who was elected as the secretary for Foreign Affairs in absentia.
Others elected on the committee are Mr. Paul Simbwa Kagombe who was the Administrator secretary and was elected new secretary-general, and Mr. David Lewis Rubongoya who was the Secretary-general was elected the new secretary for research in absentia.
Others include; Nasonko Connie was elected as the deputy secretary-general, Waiga Jimmy Saphi is the new National Treasurer, Tugume Gideon is the newly elected secretary for Information replacing Nakawa West MP Joel Basekeezi Ssenyonyi, Mr. Ssejjoba Daniel was elected as the secretary for Mobilization among others.
“We wrote to Mr. Kyagulanyi, Mr. Rubongoya, and their team informing them about the press conference but on Friday we were surprised when they didn’t attend. They informed us that they were in Omoro managing the campaigns of our party flag bearer,” says Mzee Kibalama.
“Members of the delegates’ conference decided to elect them in absentia,” he added.
Mzee Kibalama told Whisper Eye News in an exclusive interview that they are on the course of rebranding their party following their original constitution.
The delegates’ conference also decided to allow some MPs to be included on the National Executive Committee and said that some MPs were elected in absentia.
Bobi Wine is yet to comment on the developments surrounding the National Unity Platform led by Mzee Nkonge Kibalama.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) is Uganda’s leading opposition political party, which was formed in 2004 as National Unity and Reconciliation Party (NURP) but changed its name in 2019, endorsing Pop Music star Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert as their president and presidential candidate in 2021 general elections.
However, until today, there is ping pong among two groups led by Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu and Mzee Nkonge Kibalalama over who controls the party.
