Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) recently apologized for the actions of its soldier after a clip was shared by various media outlets showing its member a red top UPDF soldier dragging a poor traffic officer off his duty for refusing to let a military UPDF speeding Car pass through heavy jam on Kampala roads.

In a statement shared by the UPDF Spokesperson, Brig-Gen Felix Kulayigire, UPDF notes, “that the incident is regrettable and we extend our regrets to the affected persons, traffic department and Uganda Police in general investigations to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced and the findings will guide on our next course of action”.

“The actions of this soldier are reprehensible and are not representative of UPDF as an institution that is known for its discipline and being a people’s army, The UPDF reiterates its commitment to the rule of law as guided by the constitution and the UPDF code of conduct”, a statement added.

The incident didn’t find pleasing comments and reactions from Ugandans most especially Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, the Banana Republic writer took to his show media to through his weight on hundreds of Ugandans condemning the actions of UPDF.

He stated “You only apologize for crimes captured on camera? What about those who are committed in your dungeons/torture chambers”?

He questioned UPDF which by press time it had confirmed that it had arrested its own.

UPDF is not new to controversy, 2019 its founding officer Gen Matayo Kyaligonza Uganda’s ambassador to Burundi by then assaulted a female traffic officer in Seeta for stoping his convoy and in January 2022 a traffic officer was shot at by UPDF, and in the scuffle, he lost his leg.

No comment was captured in our efforts to ask UPDF why it will only apologize to issues raised in the media.

Many accuse UPDF of torture, it’s true that Kakwenza Rukirabashaija was arrested and tortured by UPDF security persons in yet disclosed torture chambers in Kampala.

In his book Banana Republic where writing is treasonous, Kakwenza writes about the torture he suffered at than hands of security organs.
