NUP Rakai Woman MP Candidates Petitions Court Challenging Poll Results

Grace Nalubega, the National Unity Platform-NUP Rakai Woman parliamentary candidate has petitioned Masaka High court challenging the poll results. The Electoral Commission and incumbent Rakai Woman MP, Juliet Kinyamatama, who ran as an independent candidate are first and second respondents to the suite respectively.

Kinyamatama was declared elected with 34291 votes. Nalubega came second with 19682 votes followed by the National Resistance Movement-NRM candidate, Asha Kayanja with 16634 votes, independent candidate Faith Tashabwa got 11,240 while another independent Noeline  Kishemeza trailed the pack with 306 votes.

However, Nalubega is contesting the poll result on grounds that the elections were fraught with irregularities. In her application filed on Friday through her Lawyer, Mike Mugerwa, Nalubega says the elections were marred with gross irregularities.

She says in Dwaniro, Kibanda sub-counties and Rakai town council, polling agents and voters were paid to participate in the election. She says that she was vote-rigging in places like Ntatamukye, Kibanda, and Lwakakykyu among others were number of ballots cast doubles the number of registered voters.

Mugerwa says that they have collected enough evidence necessary to make their case and expose the rot that in the just-concluded parliamentary elections.  He says the polling agents of his client were chased from various polling stations, which gave a chance to their rivals to stuff ballots.

The court is yet to fix the hearing date for the petition filed by Nalubega. Kinyamatama insists that she won the polls fairly and squarely, adding that she is ready to defend her victory in court.
