Exclusive: Gen. Muntu greets empty stadium as Rukungiri residents shun ANT candidate

The Alliance for National Transformation-ANT presidential candidate, Gen. Gregg Mugisha Muntu was greeted by any empty stadium during his campaign trail in Rukungiri district on Wednesday. The former army commander arrived at Rukungiri Municipal stadium around 3:30 pm but there was no one to receive him.

This prompted Muntu to turn back and drive to Kanungu district for his next campaign meeting. Earlier on Levi Akatukunda, the forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate for the Rwakabengo ward councilor’s seat had told URN that the people of Rukungiri would shun Muntu’s campaign meeting for fighting their party-FDC.  “We don’t have anything to share with Mugisha Muntu because of the problems, which the party is facing is because of him, he should campaign in other districts but not here where the heart of FDC is situated,” he said. Rukungiri is the home district of FDC’s founding president and four-time presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Robert Karengye, a resident of Rukungiri said Muntu lacks coordinators in Rukungiri district.  “It is not right for such a big man to come here and get frustrated like that, those whom he trusted to mobilize for him could be either NRM or FDC supporters and they planned this to happen,” he said. None of the ANC top officials could be reached for comment on the botched campaign meeting in Rukungiri district.
