The excitement in Mpigi as area NRM leaders await Museveni address

National Resistance Movement party presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, is today scheduled in Mpigi district in his second leg of campaigns in central (Buganda) region. Museveni will today interface with a select team of NRM leaders including party flag bearers from districts of Mpigi, Butambala and Gomba to preach the NRM party success story in a bid to be re-elected.

Mpigi district has seven administrative sub-counties, 56 parishes and 339 villages. 

In infrastructure, many roads that link Mpigi to its neighbouring districts have been tarmacked including; Mpigi-Kakoni road (64km) and Kakoni-Sembabule road (71km). The two roads join to form Mpigi-Kabulasoke-Maddu-Sembabule road (135km). It connects Mpigi town with Butambala and Gomba districts. Also constructed is Sembabule Villa Maria road (38m). 

There are 14 established markets which deal in various foodstuffs and merchandise. The district is well covered by all telecommunication networks and as wider coverage of both community and regional radios.

Many other trunk roads, feeder roads and community roads have been under maintenance to facilitate easy means of transport in greater Mpigi and neighbouring districts. 

In water supply, Mpigi district has six rural gross centres and a Town Council that have access to piped water. The District has two piped water systems in the town council and one rural growth Centre of Bujuuko which supplies piped water to other rural gross centres of Jeza, Katende, Kamengo, Buwama and Kayabwe.  They are all functioning well. There are also protected spring and boreholes on which the communities depend for their water supply.

In health, Mpigi district has several Health centres including 11 health centre IIIs, 20 health centre IIs and 1 health centre IV. The plans by the government are underway to upgrade health centre IV to a hospital. There are several other health facilities owned by Non-Government Organizations and Private Individuals. 

In collaboration with the government, various NGOs both Local and International have come up to offer health services in AIDS prevention and control in the district. Such activities include blood screening and counselling, medical treatment, home care, pastoral education, health education, AIDS research and orphan support.

In education, the district has over 170 schools with 134 primary schools, 33 secondary schools and 5 tertiary institutions. 

In poverty eradication programmes, Mpigi is one of the districts that access the Youth Livelihood Programme fund. The programme had benefited a number of youth with the overall goal of empowering the youth to harness their social-economic potential and increase self-employment opportunities and income levels. The District mostly targeted Youth that had never got the opportunity to attend formal education, single youth parent, youth with disability, youth living with HIV/AIDS, youth who have completed secondary school or tertiary institutions, school dropouts and University Graduates.
The Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP) has spent two (2) years in Mpigi District and is being implemented by the Youth Sector under the Community Based Services Department.
