The Ministry of Health procured 38 ambulances at a cost of sh11b to resolve issues of lack of transport for patients especially those suffering from Covid-19 in Uganda.

The new 38 ambulances will boost the ministry of health fleet .

The PS Dr Diana Atwine will today receive the first batch of 15 ambulances that were purchased using the funds appropriated by government under the COVID-19 supplementary budget. Statement reads

The Second batch of 18 ambulances is also on it’s way from Mombasa. a statement added.

According to MOH , the third batch of 5 ambulances is type C (2 road intensive Care ambulances and and 3 water boat ambulances) will arrive first week of December.

The ambulances are expected to be placed at regional Call and dispatch centres to enable quick and timely evacuations of patients in-need of EMS services.

Earlier, the government purchased 10 ambulances for Red Cross to be able to respond to all medical emergency needs along the major highways in Uganda

A survey conducted by Makerere University School of Public Health in 2018 revealed that 70% of ambulances used in Uganda to ferry patients to hospitals lack equipment, medical supplies or even trained personnel.

In most cases patients are asked fuel money in free individual ambulances provided by politicians.
