The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has confirmed that party vice chairman Salaamu Musumba is to contest for Kamuli district woman MP against National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer also the speaker of Uganda’s Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.

When Proscovia Saalamu Musumba started her consultation in meetings to contest for the seat on 2017, Hon Kadaga asked president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to give Salaamu a job in the public.

“Your Excellency, your former members of parliament from Busoga should be looked at. Some of them were left with no source of income yet they did very good work when they were still in those positions.

Key among them is your usual friend Proscovia Salaamu Musumba. Kindly find some room for her,” Kadaga said amidst cheers from the mammoth crowd during the celebrations to mark 78 years of Kyabazingaship held at Namutumba district headquarters.

Salaamu was Bugabula South MP from 1996 to 2006 before she lost to NRM’s Asuman Kiyingi in the general election.

In 2008, she lost to Stephen Mubiru in the Kamuli LC-V by-election.

But in another by-election in 2012, she defeated the NRM’s Thomas Kategere for the same position.

In 2016, Salaamu contested for area MP for Kamuli municipality and lost to NRM’s Rehema Tiwuwe Watongola.

Now 2021 she has decided to take on Hon Kadaga fighting for Kamuli woman MP seat.

Residents in Kamuli are divided as some are not okay with anyone challenging Hon Kadaga claiming that she has served her position as the speaker of Uganda’s Parliament very well.

However, others are asking the speaker to retire after along tenure as their woman MP since 1989.

Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is a lawyer and politician who has been Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda since 19 May 2011.

She is the first woman to be elected Speaker in the history of the Parliament of Uganda.

She succeeded the vice president now Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, who served as Speaker from 2001 to 2011.

She is also the current Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kamuli District Women’s Constituency, Busoga sub-region, a position she has held since 1989.
