Youth leaders claim that the nature of Uganda society which is largely peasantry, the mode of programming and broadcasting of 90% of the said media outlets is infortainment since majority are privately owned and sponsored.
Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) doesn’t have the capacity to compel FM radio stations to give opposition candidates an opportunity on air according to them.
They further stated that media houses are very few yet there are many candidates hence no capacity to give airtime even for the few who can afford to pay.
“To make matters worse, many parts of Uganda don’t have radio, TV or internet coverage, like Sebei sub-region where districts like Bukwo connect to radio stations of the neighboring Kenya’, they said.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC) revised road map, nomination for youth Village elections commences on the 5th August 2020.
However, with the banning of rallies according to new EC guidelines, it is tricky to hold search campaigns on radio, TVs or social media at a village level.
“We think Electoral commission should go back and draft a new road map and organize a normal election where there are mass rallies, they stated.”
” Countries like Burundi, South Korea, Mali and Malawi have organized elections amidst corona and we haven’t heard of mass exodus of corona Virus infection in those countries, they explained. “
Currently countries like Tanzania, Ghana and USA are preparing for presidential elections.
In US they will go to polls this November amidst the Corona Virus and “what exception does Electoral commission offers to bungle Ugandans into a hopeless scientific election in 2021 which other countries have not find sense in organizing? they asked.”
