Over 5,000 people sign petition to decolonise Uganda and rename several landmarks. Whisper Eye Updates.
Over 5,000 people have signed a petition filed by a prominent suave Ugandan lawyer Owek. Apolo Nelson Makubuya to rename all landmarks, monuments that honour British colonial rule new names of native heroes.
“The removal of visible vestiges of a colonial hegemony from public spaces is a crucial part of decolonisation,’ say Owek. Makubuya.
The petition has been welcomed by many Ugandans and just within 10 days, over 5,000 people have signed.
This process started on Uganda’s Heroes Day 9 June,2020, calling for the removal of symbols, street names monuments and other colonial relics (iconography) that represent a nefarious legacy of colonial conquest, occupation, exploitation and impunity, according to Owek. Makubuya.
“This is a historic moment in the struggle for decolonisation in Uganda,’ he stated.
Owek. Makubuya told Whisper Eye that petitioners are united in their belief that the continued public displays of colonial iconography which glorifies individuals responsible for the brutalization, subjugation and humiliation of colonised peoples in Uganda (and elsewhere) is a slap in the face of the many brave people that fought for the political independence of Africa from the 15thCentury until the late 1950s.
”It is doubly painful for others that continue to fight for the socio-economic independence of the African continent from neo-imperial subjugation and the indignity and injustice that comes with it,he explained.”
According to Owek. Makubuya, Captain Frederic Lugard attacked the Lubiri and forced Kabaka Daniel Basammula-Ekkere Mwanga Mwanga Mukasa on 26 December 1890.
Mwanga was exiled at the Seychelles islands where he died from.
He has called upon all Ugandans believing in our real heroes to sign the petition.
The petition was addressed to the president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Ugandan Parliament through the speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, and Kampala Capital City Authority.
