Speaker Kadaga has commended EOC & its Chairperson Sylvia Muwebwa

The Speaker of Uganda parliament has applauded the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission Ms Sylvia Muwebwa for the job well done . Whisper Eye Reports.

Rt Hon Speaker Rebecca Kadaga , who has also been at the forefront of fighting for equal opportunities in this country said Ms Sylvia Muwebwa has made great strides under Equal Opportunities Commission .

Ms Kadaga noted that Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC)has made the journey in promoting gender in Uganda look hopeful as equitable allocation of national resources to vulnerable persons is considered.

According to Speaker Kadaga it took 11 years to get the Gender and Equity certificate into the Constitution of Republic of Uganda.

Kadaga was hosting the EOC chairperson Sylvia Muwemba at the launch of the Equal Opportunities Commission reports on compliance of ministerial policy statements , Compliance of local government assessment frameworks papers with gender and equity requirement for the financial year 2020/2021 , and a report on the Women empowerment in Uganda 2018/2019 .

Kadaga assured Ms Sylvia Muwemba of the parliament support towards Equal Opportunities Commission as away to improve the welfare of all Ugandans.

Speaker Kadaga also commended Uganda police for ensuring visibility of women in its recruitment processes however she was concerned that most agencies in Uganda aren’t interested in recruiting persons with disabilities, & persons with albinism.

She appealed to Sylvia Muwebwa to interest Equal opportunities Commission(EOC) in the recruitment processes of the Public Service Commission and ensure albinism are part .

Ms Muwebwa the chairperson of EOC noted that this year’s UGX 45.5 trillion 2020/2021 budget , the government had allocated 8.2 trillion to address the short comings in gender equality responsiveness .

She said that this has improved to 18.2 % from previous budgets which would enable the vulnerable persons access more support from the government.

Equal Opportunities Commission Chairperson Sylvia Muhebwa also commended the Parliamentary Commission for an overall 70% performance in promoting Gender and Equity through availing shs2.9 billion to improve legislative practices through ICT.

That EOC has also collaborated with Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) to develop a gender and equality statistics strategy that will help all ministry departments and agencies to ensure and compute their input in gender parity issues , added Ms Sylvia.

She appealed to the speaker that one of the key challenges is the low budget allocated to local governments which has led to limited interventions in various sectors in promoting partly equity for vulnerable people.

She was in attendance with the Secretary of EOC Ekapu Jane.
