Kasese Woman MP Winnie Kiiza cries for help to Kasese residents affected by floods. Whisper Eye Reports

Former leader of opposition Winnie Kiiza has requested the general public to extend a hand to Kasese residents affected by massive floods.

On Wednesday , three rivers Nyamwamba, Mubuku, and Nyamugasani burst their banks leaving thousands crying for help.

MP Kiiza in her statement has made a call to everyone in position to save the people of Kasese, she states;

As you maybe aware, Kasese District has once again been hit by floods. I learnt about the calamitous visitation in the wee hours of the morning & immediately contacted my honourable colleagues from Kasese District, so we could arrive at a quick & yet cautious decision; which we did.

We have since been working around the clock to ensure that we have quick response from government & I must state that our efforts have yielded positive results. l can confirm that the Hon.Centenary Robert (Kasese Municipality MP), the State Minister responsible for Disaster, Hon.Musa Ecweru & his technical team have since made a locus visit to the affected areas & made a risk assessment of the same.

It’s clear that people’s lives have been upended by this flood; that families have lost homes, crops have been destroyed & many other possessions have been swept away.
In addition to the global health threat (coronavirus), Kasese District is most likely to be hit by hunger/famine, & a Cholera outbreak if no quick response is made by the Ministry of Health.

There’s absolutely no doubt that when the most unfortunate events (mentioned above) unfold, women, children and persons with disability are hit hardest. We therefore call for a multisectoral response to the Kasese floods, & we hope to share our call with the Prime Minister tomorrow.

Kasese water floods take atall on peoples lives

I very much appreciate officials from the Uganda Red Cross, the Kasese Local Government headed by Mr.Sibendire Bigogo, the office of the Resident District Commissioner-Kasese, the office of the Kasese Municipality Mayor; Mr.Kabyanga Godfrey, who have been on ground working 24/7 since the flood happened.

I’m deeply humbled by the vigilance exuded by the people of Kasese to the extent that we have no deaths confirmed as yet.

I understand that whenever these kinds of things happen, it can seem difficult to bear, but I know how resilient the people of Kasese are, I know that the prayers of the entire country are with us, & we shall surely get up on our feet.

To the friends of Kasese, it’s at such a time that sisterhood and brotherhood of women and men is welded. I ask you to generously respond to this call of our distressed fellow citizens & do what you can to help get the Rwenzori people back on their feet. Thank you. God bless you.
