Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye has replaced Nkurunziza in the coming May polls.

Burundian ruling party, the National Council for the Defence of Democracy–Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) has elected Evariste Ndayishimiye to be its flag bearer in the coming 2020 presidential elections.

The ruling party decision on Sunday morning in the capital Bujumbura, is confirmation that President Pierre Nkurunziza will not be seeking to extend his 15-year rule.

President Nkurinziza’s decision not to seek another term was praised locally and internationally.

The United Nations Security Council recently hailed his “commitment” to stand aside.

Nkurunziza also received a new status; the “Paramount Leader and Champion of Patriotism” as he prepares to pave way for a new president.

Burundi will be holding its General elections 20 May 2020 wherein they will elect a new President and members the National Assembly.
