Uganda launches joint Bid to host 2027 AFCON Tournament

On Monday 22nd May 2023, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni together with the First Lady Mama Janet Kataha Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports yesterday launched Uganda’s joint bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament at State House, Entebbe.

President Museveni welcomed the idea to host AFCON in 2027 but he warned that the youth should not be lost in sports and forget other income-generating activities.

“Sports is very good, and it has now transformed from mere emizanyo to emirimo. This is good, let’s take advantage of it but don’t confuse the youth that it is the only thing,” the President said.

President Museveni was in the company of Deputy Speaker Hon Thomas Tayebwa, FUFA President Eng Moses Magogo, and State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang among others.

Uganda hopes to host the African Cup of Nations of Nations in 2027 in a joint Bid with neighbors Kenya and Tanzania an event that will be happening for the first time on East African soil.

Hosting such a tournament comes with a lot of benefits like automatic participation in the tournament, and booming hotel & food business, among others.
