Makerere University Guild President Nsamba Faces Scrutiny from NUP over Museveni Remarks

Makerere University Guild President Lubega Nsamba has found himself in hot water with the National Unity Platform (NUP) following controversial comments he made during the reopening of the Makerere University Ivory Tower on October 2, 2024. In his remarks, Nsamba praised President Yoweri Museveni as an ideological proponent in Uganda and extended an invitation for the president to provide ideological orientation to Makerere students.

The ceremony, which saw President Museveni as the chief guest, was held to mark the reopening of the historic Ivory Tower, a symbol of academic excellence in Uganda, which had been closed for renovation following a fire in 2020. The event also witnessed the installation of Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of the university.

However, Nsamba’s comments did not sit well with the NUP, the party he represents. Sources within NUP expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that Gen. Museveni does not embody the values of ideological leadership but is rather seen as a dictator by many in the opposition. NUP officials believe that such statements from one of their own guild leaders run contrary to the party’s stance, which advocates for the end of Museveni’s long-standing rule.

Nsamba’s remarks have triggered debate, with some accusing him of betraying the party’s ideals, while others argue he was merely being diplomatic during a significant university event. The tension within NUP over these comments highlights the sensitivity surrounding Uganda’s political landscape, especially when it involves the 40-year rule of President Museveni.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Nsamba’s relationship with NUP will be affected, and whether any disciplinary action will be taken.
