Kizza Besigye faces harsh prison conditions, Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura alleges plot to kill him

Doreen Nyanjura, a Ugandan political activist, accused President Yoweri Museveni on Friday of plotting to kill opposition leader Kizza Besigye while he is detained at Luzira Maximum Prison.

A delegation from the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) reported that Besigye has been given a stark choice: eat prison food or starve. Besigye has rejected the canteen’s offerings, citing safety concerns.

The PFF delegation also stated that Besigye is no longer allowed to receive food from relatives or supporters. Instead, he must rely on what is available at the prison canteen, which includes basic items like posho and milk.

Besigye’s interaction with visitors has been reduced to conversations via a prison phone booth, and he is isolated from other inmates, unable to participate in communal activities like prayers.

Nyanjura expressed her belief that these measures are part of a deliberate attempt by Museveni to harm or kill Besigye, referencing comments allegedly made by Museveni’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Human rights groups have criticized the Ugandan government for its treatment of political opponents, with Besigye’s current conditions potentially highlighting ongoing concerns about judicial fairness and prisoner rights in the country.
