Gen Muhoozi urges Ugandans to give President Museveni a historic send-off in 2026 elections

Gen Muhoozi urges Ugandans to give President Museveni a historic send-off in 2026 elections

In a spirited call to action, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, has rallied Ugandans to ensure an unprecedented electoral victory for his father in what could be his last term in office. Whisper Eye news reports.

Taking to his X handle, Muhoozi emphasized the significance of the 2026 presidential election, urging citizens to rally around the long-serving leader.

“For Mzee’s last term in 2026, I request all Ugandans to give Mzee the best send off ever! Let Mzee get over 80% of the vote for the first time. Target 80%,” Muhoozi declared, referring to President Museveni with the affectionate nickname ‘Mzee’, meaning elder in Swahili.

This bold statement comes amid speculation about the future of Ugandan politics, particularly regarding Museveni’s retirement and the potential succession. Museveni, who has been at the helm of Uganda since 1986, has not officially announced whether 2026 will indeed be his final term, but discussions about his legacy and the political future of the nation are increasingly prominent.

Gen Muhoozi’s call for an 80% vote share is not just about electoral success but seems designed to demonstrate overwhelming support for Museveni, potentially setting the stage for a smooth transition or endorsement of a successor.

However, this proposition faces several challenges. Critics argue that achieving such a high percentage would require either genuine mass support or significant electoral manipulation, a point of contention in Uganda’s political discourse. Additionally, there’s ongoing debate about the state of democracy in Uganda, with opposition parties frequently claiming electoral irregularities in past elections.

The response from Ugandans has been mixed. While some see it as a patriotic call to honor a leader who has steered the country through various challenges, millions view it skeptically, questioning the implications for democracy and political pluralism in Uganda.

Political analysts suggest that Muhoozi’s statement could be a strategic move to rally support not only for Museveni but also to position himself favorably for future political battles. With Muhoozi’s own political ambitions often speculated upon, his endorsement of his father’s campaign could be seen as a dual strategy to strengthen both his father’s and his own political standing.

As Uganda moves towards the 2026 elections, all eyes will be on how this call for an 80% vote will play out, what it signifies for Uganda’s political landscape, and whether it will indeed mark the end of Museveni’s long reign or the beginning of a new chapter under potentially different leadership.
We shall keep you posted!
