High Court orders fresh elections, declares seat vacant
MPIGI – In a dramatic ruling, the High Court in Mpigi has nullified the election of Saazi Godfrey as the Member of Parliament for Gomba East Constituency.
In his ruling delivered today, Justice Jamson Karemani ordered for fresh elections in Gomba East following a successful election petition filed by Kirumira Henry Harris Kalule.
The court has declared the Gomba East parliamentary seat vacant.
Saazi Godfrey, who was declared winner of the Gomba East seat, now ceases to be a Member of Parliament pending fresh elections to be organized by the Electoral Commission.
Justice Karemani ruled that the petitioner, Kirumira Henry Harris Kalule, proved his case to warrant the nullification of the election results.
Details of the grounds for nullification are still emerging, but the court has directed the Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections in line with the Parliamentary Elections Act.
The ruling is a major blow to Saazi Godfrey and a big political win for Kirumira, who has been challenging the outcome of the hotly contested Gomba East race.
The development sets the stage for a high-stakes by-election in Gomba East, one of the most politically charged constituencies in the Greater Mpigi region.
By press time, reactions were already pouring in from both camps, with Saazi’s camp yet to issue an official statement on whether they will appeal the High Court decision in the Court of Appeal.
