In a bold move, Stephen Okwaimungu, a outspoken National Resistance Movement (NRM) publicist for Paidha Town Council in Zombo District, has launched a fierce campaign to root out graft by urging voters to reject corrupt leaders at the ballot box.
Speaking at a press conference last Friday at Sky-lux Hotel in Paidha, Okwaimungu, known for his sharp and principled stance in Zombo and greater Nebbi, blamed entrenched corruption for the district’s stagnation.
“Fellow voters, this isn’t about bribes or handouts. We must vote out these corrupt leaders who’ve kept us lagging behind,” he declared.
Okwaimungu also called for the ousting of leaders who have neglected education over the past five years. “Kick out those who’ve ignored our schools and failed to champion education. Development isn’t about attending funerals, it’s about service,” he emphasized.
The statement comes amid a charged political climate, with incumbents vying for reelection and new candidates aiming to topple them.
Recently, allegations surfaced implicating some newly appointed NRM executives in Zombo in the misappropriation of youth funds, sparking outrage among locals.
A candidate for Okoro County’s parliamentary seat praised Zombo’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Festus Ayikobua, for his uncompromising stance against corruption.
At an NRM meeting last week at the district headquarters, Ayikobua urged stakeholders to unite in the fight against graft. “I have zero tolerance for corruption and I’m some who tolerate corruption less, We must work together to eradicate it for Zombo to prosper,” he stated.
Francis Bolingo, an Athuma Sub-County councilor, stressed that combating corruption requires collective action across political and religious lines.
“We must expose the corrupt openly and without hesitation,” he said.
Okwaimungu, the NRM publicity secretary for Paidha Town Council, doubled down on his resolve. “As long as people like me are here, no leader , whether NRM, central, or local government, will get away with embezzling funds. We will expose you,” he vowed.
