FDC Calls for Return of Prodigal Sons, sets eyes on 2026 polls

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has extended an olive branch to its estranged members in a bid to foster unity and rebuild the party’s strength ahead of the 2026 general elections. Speaking at a press conference held on January 15, 2025, at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Kampala, FDC President Hon. Eng. Patrick Amuriat called upon dissenting members to return, emphasizing that the party is open to reconciliation and fresh beginnings.

Amuriat revealed that hundreds of former FDC members have already approached the party, expressing their willingness to return.

“We welcome everyone who wishes to rejoin us with a clean heart,” he said. He emphasized that the party’s doors remain open to any member who shares the vision of rebuilding a strong opposition force to challenge the ruling government.

During the press conference, Amuriat also confirmed the party’s commitment to actively participate in the 2026 general elections. He disclosed that FDC is set to embark on a robust plan to identify suitable candidates for various positions by June 2025. The party is also preparing to roll out a comprehensive manifesto and establish a campaign bureau to coordinate its electoral strategy.

Amuriat outlined key areas the party will focus on, including resource mobilization, enhancing media and publicity teams, and resolving internal challenges at the grassroots level. These efforts, he said, are aimed at ensuring the FDC is well-prepared to present itself as a formidable force come 2026.

In a move to solidify its presence across Uganda, Amuriat announced the launch of the second phase of countrywide tours, which will commence at the end of January. These tours are intended to strengthen party structures, address grievances among members, and reconnect with supporters across the country.

“Our party went through turmoil, but we have stabilized now,” Amuriat reassured. He highlighted that the tours will provide an opportunity to resolve grassroots issues and build a stronger foundation for the party’s future activities.

The FDC has also unveiled its strategy for resource mobilization to support its activities and preparations for the elections. Amuriat noted that funds will be raised through membership card registration, fundraising events, donations, and even from the party’s properties. He called on all supporters to rally behind the party and contribute to its revival efforts.

In addition to outlining the party’s plans, Amuriat condemned the ongoing trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obedi Lutale in military courts. He described the trials as a blatant violation of the law and criticized the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for its continuous disregard for justice. “Telling the NRM to stop this behavior is like flogging a dead horse,” he remarked, expressing frustration with the government’s oppressive tactics.

Amuriat concluded by urging unity among party members and supporters, stressing that the FDC is ready to reclaim its position as a leading opposition party in Uganda. He encouraged all members, both old and new, to actively participate in the party’s activities as they gear up for the upcoming elections.

The press conference marked a turning point for the FDC, signaling the party’s readiness to rise above past challenges and embrace a new era of growth and resilience. With its doors wide open to former members and a clear roadmap for the future, the FDC is positioning itself as a beacon of hope for Ugandans yearning for change.
