Prominent activist and head of council for Bavandimwe Mr. Frank Gashumba has announced a press conference to share what he describes as “good news” from President Yoweri Museveni concerning the challenges faced by the Banyarwanda community in Uganda. The event is scheduled for Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Speke Hotel in Kampala, starting at 2:00 p.m.
In an official statement, Gashumba reflected on the struggles faced by the indigenous Banyarwanda community, citing issues of persecution, victimization, segregation, and the violation of their citizenship rights. These challenges have reportedly stemmed from actions by some elements within the Immigration Department and the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
A Journey of Advocacy and Engagement
Gashumba recounted the efforts of the Council for Abavandimwe, which has been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of the Banyarwanda in Uganda. Over the years, the council has engaged with various government institutions, including: Ministry of Internal Affairs, Uganda Human Rights Commission, The Office of the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Equal Opportunities Commission, Speaker and Parliament of Uganda, Leader of the Opposition etc
Most notably, Gashumba highlighted their engagement with President Museveni, who, according to him, has shown keen interest in addressing these issues. Gashumba stated that the President not only fully understood the plight of the Banyarwanda but also raised the matter during a cabinet discussion, with confirmation from the Prime Minister of Uganda.
The press conference aims to update the Banyarwanda community and the public on the outcomes of these engagements. Gashumba has extended an invitation to all individuals affected by these challenges, particularly those who were denied a national ID or passport, Had their national IDs deactivated by NIRA, and had their IDs confiscated at border points
“This is a moment of hope and resolution for the Banyarwanda community,” Gashumba stated.
In his message, Gashumba also touched on the emotional toll of feeling rejected, likening it to physical pain. He emphasized the importance of standing together to overcome these challenges, expressing gratitude to the Banyarwanda community and their supporters for their resilience and solidarity.
The event is expected to attract significant attention, as many await details of the President’s intervention and the steps being taken to resolve these long-standing issues.
