How Museveni’s tactics dismantled NUP’s ‘Kunga Kunga’ mission

The leading opposition political party in Uganda, the National Unity Platform (NUP) is faced with the greatest test ever since its establishment as its mobilisation drive ‘Kunga Kunga’ program was penetrated by President Museveni as he promised.

In 2022 President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni said that he would finish NUP, and many of NUP members are working with him.

A reliable source intimated to Whisper Eye News, that the ‘Kunga Kunga’ program now targets big NUP MPs whom they’re to replace come 2026 parliamentary elections.

The ongoing battle between NUP leaders in Masaka is part of the problem as ‘Kunga Kunga’ is mobilizing to replace former LoP Hon Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba with Masaka City Mayor Florence Namayanja, Mr Kuteesa to replace Kimanya – Kabonera MP, Hon Dr Abed Bwanika.

In Butambala Hon Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi will be replaced also and other constituencies including Mukono Municipality, Busiro East and others.

However, NUP supporters are questioning ‘Kunga program coordinator Mr Bobi Wine’s brother Nyanzi Fred Ssentamu popularly known as Chairman. Nyanzi and Ms Nabatanzi Faridah the importance of mobilizing areas under the leadership of NUP.

They say that the ‘Kunga Kunga’ program should mobilise other regions; Western, Northern and Eastern because NUP won the Buganda region therefore, making no impact to double efforts in mobilizing the region.

Political analysts say that the ‘Kunga Kunga’ program may be a boomerang that may cost NUP support in Buganda. Some have a hypothesis that the ‘Kunga Kunga’ program may be the greatest test to the party since its establishment in 2004.

According to insider sources close to Nyanzi and within the NUP ranks, Museveni’s strategy involved a multi-pronged approach aimed at sowing discord within the “Kunga Kunga” movement and ultimately neutralizing its influence on the political landscape.

President Museveni’s top Intelligence operatives conducted extensive surveillance on Chairman Nyanzi and other prominent members of the “Kunga Kunga” movement, monitoring their activities, communications, and networks. This surveillance reportedly enabled the Museveni administration to gather intelligence on the movement’s plans and vulnerabilities.

IPolitical youthful operatives loyal to President Museveni are said to have infiltrated the “Kunga Kunga” movement, posing as youthful supporters or sympathizers while secretly working to undermine its objectives from within. These operatives allegedly engaged in acts of sabotage, spreading disinformation, and sowing discord among members to weaken the Kunga Kunga’s cohesion and effectiveness.

Kampala Central Former Aspirant Fred Nyanzi and other leaders of the “Kunga Kunga” have been subjected to political pressure and intimidation tactics aimed at silencing their dissent and coercing them into submission. This pressure includes threats of arrest, harassment, and defamation campaigns designed to tarnish their reputation and credibility.

Despite these challenges, Fred Nyanzi and other members of the “Kunga Kunga” movement remained steadfast in their commitment to advocating for political change and challenging the status quo. However, the alleged interference and subversion orchestrated by the President Museveni administration have raised serious concerns with in the party.
