Gen Kainerugaba, who visited the factory in July 2021 before it started production in 2022, said he was informed by management that they are now able to produce 60,000 metric tonnes per annum.

“Met the management of Bugiri Sugar Factory, who informed me that since opening last year, production of sugar at their factory has reached 60,000 metric tonnes per annum,” Gen Kainerugaba said in a Saturday statement, adding that he also had wide-ranging discussions with the managers.

“We also exchanged ideas on a wide range of issues to do with the sugar industry. They also gifted me a bag of their sugar.”

The factory is located in Kapyanga sub-county in Bugiri district.

Elison Karuhanga, one of the directors, told Gen Kainerugaba, who was the Land Forces commander during his 2021 visit, that thousands of residents would be employed at the facility.

He also noted that since the people of Busoga subregion are experienced sugarcane growers, they wouldn’t require new skills to produce raw materials for the factory.

The Member of Parliament for Bukooli North constituency, Stephen Bakka Mugabi, who was also present during the last visit, noted the local leadership had entered an informal agreement with the investors to employ the young people in the area that hosts the factory.

The meeting between Gen Kainerugaba and the managers was held on Saturday at SFC Headquarters in Entebbe.
