The reigning king of Buganda ” the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II received a fully refurbished Rolls Royce Phantom V limousine which used to belong to his late father Maj Gen Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Mutesa II.
Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga handed over the sleek vintage vehicle to Kabaka Mutebi II as other Buganda officials and Buganda subjects cheered up.
At a belated birthday ceremony held at Lubiri Palace, Mengo, Kabaka Mutebi smiled at the gifted car as a surprise he barely thought would come this first.
History of the Car
According to Mengo, this car belonged to Kabaka Muteesa II by then in 1966 before the post-independence chaos.
When Milton Obote then Prime Minister of Uganda militarily captured power property that belonged to Sir Muteesa was captured too including cars among them that survived was this Rolls Royce that was parked at state house Nakasero.
After negotiation between Buganda and the Central government, It was officially handed to Buganda in 2020 by Minister of Tourism Tom Butime, the same vehicle had since been kept at Uganda Museum since 2013 when it was removed from State House.
It was a car officially used by King Fred when he became president of entire Uganda in 1964 and it belonged to him personally although some elements from the Obote regime claimed it belonged to the government of Uganda.
